Diabetes

Understanding the causes, signs, prevention, and treatment of diabetes through the perspective of Tibetan Medicine

What Can Tibetan Medicine Tell Us About Diabetes?

Tibetan Medicine looks at diabetes through the relationship between digestion, the elements, and the body’s internal balance.

In this perspective, poor digestion plays an important role in the development of internal disorders. Diabetes is also associated with an excess of the earth and water elements, known as bad kan or phlegm, which has cold and heavy qualities.

During this workshop, Dr. Phuntsog Wangmo will explain this perspective in more detail and explore how diet, lifestyle, digestion, and individual constitution can be considered when understanding and managing diabetes.

Why Look at Diabetes from a Different Perspective?

Modern medicine provides essential tools for diagnosing and managing diabetes. Tibetan Medicine does not seek to replace these approaches, but offers a different perspective on the condition, focusing on digestion, constitution, the elements, diet, lifestyle, and the individual circumstances of each person.

This workshop is an opportunity to learn about this traditional medical perspective and how it approaches the factors that may contribute to diabetes.

Diabetes: A Growing Global Challenge

Diabetes is one of the fastest-growing health challenges worldwide. According to the International Diabetes Federation, an estimated 589 million adults are currently living with diabetes — approximately 1 in 9 adults worldwide.

Beyond the numbers, diabetes can have long-term consequences, affecting the cardiovascular system, kidneys, nerves, eyes, and other parts of the body. This makes prevention, early awareness, and effective management increasingly important.

As diabetes continues to affect people and families around the world, exploring different medical perspectives can provide valuable insights into understanding the condition and the factors that may influence its development.
