The Healing Power of Kunye Massage and External Therapies in Tibetan Medicine

For centuries, Tibetan medicine has offered a holistic approach to health, weaving together physical, emotional, and mental well-being. Unlike many modern systems that focus only on symptoms, it looks to restore harmony in the whole person. According to Tibetan medical science each kind of cure comprises four fundamental elements: diet, behaviour, medicines and different kinds of external therapies. There exist different kinds of therapies, but for those wishing to maintain good health or get rid of physical and mental disturbances, kunye massage represents a marvellous therapy.

What Is Kunye Massage?

The term Kunye (སྐུ་གཉེས་) can be translated as “ applying oil for massage”. In fact oil is applied in critical points of the human body, the same points where acupuncture or moxibustion are done. And through the massage oils or unguents are absorbed by the pores of the skin. Kunye is one of the oldest healing arts in Tibetan medicine. It is found both in the Bon and Buddhist traditions

Traditionally, it was used both in daily self-care and in clinical settings. The treatment combines warm herbal oils with precise techniques of pressing, kneading, rubbing, and working with energy points. By its very nature kunye can be easily practised by any person who has the willingness to study and practice it in order to understand its benefits. So it is not necessary to be a doctor, a yogi or to practice meditation to perform it.

Kunye aims to restore and balance any alteration of the humors and the elements in the body’s subtle energies, bringing the mind into a state of calm clarity. The practice of Kunye can also bring excellent general health, guaranteeing new energy for well-being while developing one’s potentiality. This massage can be used for those suffering from an excess of rLung (the “wind” energy), which is often disturbed by stress, excessive mental exertion, irregular routines, and emotional strain. It is also indicated for people who are physically weak and aged, and those who are suffering because of mental disturbances: depression, anxiety, insomnia, hyper activity and others. Furthermore, using specific unguents and medical creams is also highly indicated for skin diseases in general.

The Benefits of Kunye

Modern life, with its constant demands and rapid pace, often creates imbalances that Tibetan medicine described centuries ago. A session of Kunye can help to:

  • Soothe the nervous system: The warmth of the oils and rhythmic flow of the massage encourage deep relaxation and better sleep.
  • Balance the three energies (Nyepa): Especially effective for excess rLung, Kunye can reduce restlessness, anxiety, depression, and fatigue.
  • Improve circulation and detoxification: Gentle stimulation of energy channels helps move stagnation and supports natural detox processes.

Nourish body and treat the skin: Herbal oils are carefully chosen for each constitution, leaving the tissues supple and revitalized, and healing specific skin conditions

Beyond Kunye: External Therapies of Tibetan Medicine

Kunye is part of a larger family of external therapies, each chosen according to the patient’s constitution and imbalance:
Moxibustion: Applying heat from burning herbs in specific points in order to energize and warm the body.

  • Cupping: Creating suction to move blood stagnation and ease muscle tension.
  • Hormé: Using warm, aromatic compresses to calm rLung and gently relieve stress or insomnia.
  • Compress Therapy: Herbal packs applied to soothe pain and stiffness.
  • Bloodletting: A more specialized method, traditionally used to clear heat and toxins.
  • Acupuncture: A more specialized method where special needles are applied in specific points for many different purposes

Each therapy works not just on the physical body, but also on the subtle energies that connect body and mind..

Why These Practices Matter Today

In a world where stress and chronic imbalance are so common, these time-honored therapies are finding a renewed place. They remind us that healing does not always come from “doing more,” but often from creating space to rest, receive, and reconnect. Whether experienced as preventative care or as part of a healing journey, external therapies like Kunye offer simple yet profoundly healing ways to return to balance.
The wisdom of Tibetan medicine teaches us that true health is balance— within ourselves and with the world around us. Kunye massage, along with other external therapies, is more than a treatment; it is a practice of nourishment, presence, and balance. In bringing these ancient methods into modern life, we can rediscover gentler, more holistic ways to care for our physical body, our energy and our mental health.
